Update: After writing this post I decided to do keyword research on “keyword research”. PROTIP: Don’t do research on keyword research. Your head will explode!
Question: How the hell did you find this post?! Seriously, how did you find it? Tell me!
What is an SEO Keyword?
There is a dictionary definition for keyword (kiːwəːd/ | noun | a word which acts as the key to a cipher or code) which is different from how it’s used in terms of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Let’s look at [the definition straight from the horse’s mouth] (Google), then I’ll add my two cents.
Keywords are phrases that you choose to determine when and where your ad can appear. They’re matched to terms that people search for or web content that they view. Selecting keywords that are closely related to your ads can help you reach customers who are looking for what your business has to offer.
That underlined bit is the most important part keywords are “terms [or phrases] that people search for”. Google’s interest in keywords are twofold.
- As defined above, keywords determine what ads will be displayed.
- Google, Bing and Yahoo use keywords to decide what websites appear on the first page of their search results.
You’re interested in #2.
You research SEO keywords to find out what people are searching for and create content that gets you on first page of a Google, Bing or Yahoo search.
Step One: Fuck Keyword Research!
BOOM! Why would I say that in a post focused on keyword research? Keyword research can be frustrating and time consuming. Don’t spend too much time looking for the “perfect” keywords to use for your article. Instead, start writing your article and when it’s done go look for keywords that are a good fit.
Here’s how Keywordtool.io (a website that specializes in keyword research) explains it in less than 140 characters:
@CaseyAPayne use long-tail keywords from Google autocomplete to update the existing content on your website and get more traffic.

Step Two: Think Like A Person With a Problem
What is the #1 reason you end up typing something into the search bar? It’s because, large or small, you have a problem you’re trying to solve. These problems come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes you’re just trying to win an argument with your lady and need to prove to her how wrong she is about the drug laws in Seattle. (PROTIP: Winning an argument with your lady can only end in a loss.) Sometimes you’re looking for the cheapest moving company in Seattle. (I told you not to prove her wrong!)
The point is that if you if think like a person with a problem you will naturally create good keywords.
Step Three: Write
Good Killer Content!
This one should be obvious but it needs to be explicitly stated. Let me make myself clear…
Why do you want to write
good killer content?
- Killer content increases sales. Crappy content increases fails.
- People share killer good content.
The only reason to care about keyword research and SEO is to increase monies… unless you’re trying to be internet famous (PROTIP: Don’t try to be internet famous.)
Step Four: Do Keyword Research
It’s paradoxical, but keyword research is actually the last thing you want to worry about when doing keyword research.
If you already know what you want to write. Just sit down and write, you don’t need to do keyword research.
If you’re not sure what you want to write about. Come up with some topics specific to your niche and use keyword research to generate ideas and discover what people are looking for.
If you’re trying to sell shit and don’t want to compete with a bunch of other mutherfuckers trying to sell shit. Keyword research will help you determine if there is a market for your information and how competitive it will be to be on the first page of Google when people go looking for it.
I’ll talk about actually doing keyword research in [
another post] (it’s not done yet!).
Step Six: PROFIT!!!!
If you think I skipped step five you must be new to the internet. [“Step Five = ???”] didn’t need it’s own heading. Keyword research is about getting monies or being internet famous (to get monies). It’s just one of many things you can do to help you rank high on Google and other search engines. Ranking high on search engines is just one of many ways to drive traffic to your website to generate sales and leads.
I’m pointing this out at the end because I don’t want you to get too caught up in any of the traffic getting techniques. You won’t, and can’t, master them in a day! Just keep playing with things and keep things fun.
